This commemorative Crown was struck to mark 100 years since the death of Queen Victoria. Born in 1819, Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and ruled until 1901. Her reign was marked by a period of industrial, scientific, political and societal change within the United Kingdom which became known as the Victoria Era. The design of this Five Pound coin was inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was designed by Mary Milner-Dickens. Detail of the decorative iron frame of the Crystal Palace, built to house the Exhibition, is divided by a ‘V’ which contains a youthful portrait of Victoria and the centenary dates: ‘1901 · 2001’.
